Available in 3 sizes these hand-made creations are both beautiful and functional.
Suribachi & Surikogi are traditional Japanese mortar & pestle and you can use it for grinding sesame seeds, nuts, and spices. You can even grind and mix ingredients in the mortar to create dipping sauces. The grinding grooves on the inside of the mortar are carved by hand and are then glazed, making it difficult for odors to linger and making it easier to clean. The bottom of the mortar also has silicon tracks to prevent from sliding during use.
Because this mortar is so beautiful, once you’ve mixed your sauce, it can double as a serving dish. The spouted lip (called
katakuchi in Japanese) makes it easier to pour the contents. This mortar comes with a
surikogi (pestle) made from environmentally-sustainably harvested wood.
We recommend our Fine Teeth Bamboo Scraper to help get out the all goodness without any waste.
To make ground sesame seeds, we also suggest roasting fine sesame seeds in
Horoku Sesame Roaster before for the most aromatic result.

*The Surikogi (pestle) can be white wood (shown in the pictures) or dark and course textured sansho wood depending on the supplies at the timing). Both are high quality wood and equally functional.,
