Gifu Prefecture, often referred to as the “heart of Japan”, is situated in the center of Honshu, Japan’s main island. Nestled amongst majestic mountains and crystal-clear streams, Gifu is rich in history, culture, and craftsmanship. TOIRO invites you to join us on our journey to this beautiful region through their famous hand-crafted DONBURI bowls. Throughout the course of this fair we will introduce more than twenty different varieties of donburi.

Gifu and Mino-Yaki Pottery

Gifu is known and revered for its historic Mino-yaki pottery and this origins of this celebrated tradition can be traced back to the 7th century. Gifu is known for their donburi production, in fact, they are the region with the most donburi production in all of Japan, the donburi capitol being Dachi Town. They are so well known for their donburi bowls that Dachi Town hosts a donburi festival every year. Were you to visit Gifu and meet these potters you might be surprised at the wide variety of donburi spanning numerous bowls of different sizes and shapes with equally varied purposes.
