Kaneko Kohyo was founded in 1921 by Ito Kohyo and began on a small mountain near Toki City in Gifu Prefecture. Originally Japan’s largest producer of tokkuri (sake serving flasks), Kaneko Kohyo’s history and traditions hark back to the much-admired local Mino-yaki pottery styles. While preserving these historic techniques and styles, Kaneko Kohyo now strives to create new items that meet and exceed the expectations of discerning consumers seeking originality, beauty, and functionality for their dining and entertaining experiences.

Giyaman is a Japanese loanword referring to “glassware,” created during the Edo period in the 17th century and commonly used until Meiji era in late 1800’s. Kaneko Kohyo’s Giyaman series is made up of signature porcelain tableware which truly highlights the artisan’s special craftmanship. Its glaze embodies both the lustrous characteristics of lacquer and the glowing radiance of glass. Giyaman porcelain became widely known during its use at a banquet in September 2012 at the Palace of Versailles in France, hosted by one of the world’s most famous Champagne brands, Don Perignon. VIP’s from around the world were invited to this “Dinner of the Century,” catered for by Chef Piege, one of the top chefs in Paris. The finishing dessert was presented on Giyaman tableware which Chef Piege selected as he commented, “I ordered additional sets for this diner party, as I cannot imagine my beloved desserts being served on anything but Giyaman.”
Giyaman "Aizome Blue"
Long admired and internationally renowned traditional Japanese aizome indigo dye is said to develop a deeper hue the more it is used. Giyaman Aizome’s elegant, dark blue coloring is reminiscent of that used by traditional Japanese potters and has been selected for use by many top European fashion houses and master chefs. The chrysanthemum styling and rich coloring of these special dishes provide a wide range of uses for many different occasions.
