Introductory Kintsugi Class
We were so happy to welcome instructor Miya Smith of POJ Studio to TOIRO for a very special introductory kintsugi workshop. It was a hands-on experience dedicated entirely to the Japanese art of repair.
Participants learned about the rich history and cultural roots of kintsugi, the centuries-old Japanese practice of repairing broken pottery with bronze. Rather than hiding damage, kintsugi embraces it and treats every crack and imperfection as a part of the object's story and beauty.
Each participant then took part in the final step of the kintsugi process themselves, applying red urushi and finishing their own piece with metallic powder to take home. It was a fascinating experience, and every finished piece was as unique as the person who made it.
Events like this are exactly what we love about TOIRO bringing people together through craft, culture, and the kind of quiet beauty that only comes from slowing down and making something by hand.
