Specializing in highly-praised Mino washi paper crafts, Kamino Shigoto’s goal is to incorporate traditional Japanese washi paper into daily life. Historically washi paper has been used in Japan for everything from umbrellas, to handheld lanterns, to traditional sliding doors. Making washi paper is a 1300-year old process, involving much time and skill to make and dye each sheet by hand. Kamino Shigoto wants to keep this traditional technique alive while bringing joy to people with the simplistic beauty of washi paper. In Japanese, kami means paper and shigoto means work - showing Kamino Shigoto’s perseverance to design products that bring washi paper into the everyday lives of people.
Mino Washi Paper
Kamino Shigoto works with a handful of top Mino Tesuki Washi artisans to create handmade Mino washi paper products. Mino washi paper is very thin, smooth, and translucent, requiring great skill and care to make. As of January 2018, only five highly skilled members of the Mino Washi Paper Preservation Association are currently able to make this special paper. This specialized skill was declared an important cultural asset of Japan in 1969 and was registered in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage technique in 2014.
Made by hand, these beautiful window decorations will liven up any room. The washi paper is strong and flexible and can be applied to smooth glass, such as candle holders or windows. These decals are a made by creating thin, translucent paper lacework, called Sukashi Washi. To apply, simply spray the surface with a little water and press the decal on. These decals can be peeled off once dry and stored for reuse.
