Shibukusa Ryuzo Pottery is a 6th and 7th generation family run pottery studio that specializes in Shibukusa style ceramics. Shibukusa Ryuzo pottery is deeply intertwined with the history of Gifu prefecture, which originated in 1842 when the feudal lord in Takayama started a local industry focusing in pottery. The government brought in potters and painters from Aichi and Ishikawa prefectures, marking the start of this new industry. Now, while the 6th generation father continues to create the traditional Shibukusa-style pottery, the 7th generation brothers focus on taking inspiration from the current time period and adding their own unique stylistic elements to create a constantly evolving artform.
Shinogi Rice Bowl
Shibukusa’s goal is to create products from natural materials. While most potteries use commercial glazes, Shibukusa focuses on organic materials to create their own glazes. The white glaze used in their pottery is made from straw in organically-grown rice plants and the colored glazes are made with wood ashes and mineral rich clay. Both are considered to be historic-style glazes.
Shinogi is the Japanese word for a blade’s ridges, reflected in the ridged (shaved) pattern in the bottom part of the bowl. This stylistic pattern not only shows its wabi-sabi beauty, but also reduces excess weight and provides a nice grip and texture when held.
