Masterfully crafted Bamboo Tea Bowl
Originating in Kyoto, this fifth-generation atelier combines traditional shaping techniques with modern design concepts. Bamboo used in Kohchosai Kosuga products is Madake or Mousouchiku variety, which is sourced in Japan and is light-weight and very sturdy.
Urushi, meaning lacquerware or lacquer, is a traditional Japanese technique dating back to almost 9,000 years ago. It is done by layering thin coats of lacquer tree sap onto an object, typically wood or bamboo, and curing it, producing a glazed effect. Also, it forms a protective, waterproof coating that helps repel mold and mildew and helps prevent rotting or weathering in the object.
This lacquered tea bowl is unique in that the natural shape of the bamboo is preserved and minimal alteration is done to the overall shape-- you can still notice the natural grooves in the node of the bamboo. Because of this, each bowl will be slightly different in shape and size. It's incredibly light, easy to handle, and the natural shape of the bamboo feels comforting in the hand.
Pair this bowl with our Takayama Chasen, Mini Chasen, Powdered Tea Container, or our Tea Ladle to gift a loved one. Use the set with our Fuji no Haru ceremonial-grade matcha or our Organic Natural Matcha to create the ideal matcha beverage.
