From kneading the clay and throwing it on the potter's wheel to firing it in the kiln, each piece is meticulously crafted by a master artisan at Nagatani-en. A beautiful showcase of Iga pottery craftsmanship, it is as much a work of art as it is functional cookware.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWith its thick walls and generous capacity of about 4 qt (4,000 ml), the Iki Donabe is ideal for hot pot gatherings of up to 7 people. It also makes a beautiful covered serving dish at the table.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAvailable in two colors: \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/toirokitchen.com\/products\/iki-donabe-gen\"\u003eGen (玄)\u003c\/a\u003e, a matte ink black, and \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/toirokitchen.com\/products\/iki-donabe-tan\"\u003eTan (丹\u003c\/a\u003e), a warm red-brown. Iga was once the bed of ancient Lake Biwa, and its porous clay heats slowly, holds heat well, and stays warm long after it comes off the heat.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eYour donabe develops its character as it ages\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs you use your donabe over and over, it develops character and that’s something to be welcomed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eThe very thin cracks could appear on the surface (glaze) of the donabe. It’s called “kannyu” in Japanese and the cracks run like veins. They are the naturally developed cracks on the glaze and won’t affect the function of the donabe.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eOnce you start using the donabe, the bottom may begin to change color, and dark spots (like scorch marks) may appear. This is a natural part of the donabe developing character.
