Originating in the 17th century, Hida Shunkei is a lacquering technique characterized by deep red or yellow colored wood. This technique was developed in Hida, located in Gifu Prefecture. The original pieces made with this technique resembled the coloring of the famous Hishunkei tea container, leading to the name Hida Shunkei. This technique involves hand painting many thin coats of clear lacquer over sawara or hinoki cypress wood, bringing out the natural pattern of the wood grain. Hida Shunkei pieces are meant not only for special occasions, but also designed to be used in everyday life.
Located in Gifu prefecture, TozawaShikki works with artisans and provides them a platform to share their work with the public. This lacquerware collective specializes in Hida Shunkei, helping spread this regional technique that was designated as a traditional craft of Japan in 1975.
The depth of the wood grain pattern in these lacquerware products is a result of the hegime technique, where artisans gently carve out the natural grain of the wood and then apply the lacquer to bring out the intricacies of the natural wood pattern.
