Ohashi Ryoki

Located in Ogaki, Japan, Ohashi Ryoki has been the leading producer of traditional handcrafted masu boxes for over 60 years. Masu boxes have played an important role in Japanese tradition for over 1,300 years. When rice was still a form of currency, people used masu to measure out certain quantities for trading. Now, masu are more commonly used for serving sake and represent good fortune. Masu means growth in Japanese, which is why many people view it as a sign of prosperity and happiness.  Ogaki City is located near a major Hinoki lumber manufacturing center, so Hinoki, or Japanese Cypress, lumber is easy to source. Because of this, over 80% of masu boxes in Japan are produced in Ogaki City. It is also important to recognize that Ohashi Ryoki uses lumber that does not meet building standards due to its shape or size, so their products are considered environmentally friendly.
