This hand-crafted earthenware suribachi (mortar) with surikogi (pestle) set, was crafted by a historic pottery producer in Toki, Gifu Prefecture, since 1910. Available in 3 sizes these hand-made creations are both beautiful and functional. Suribachi & Surikogi are traditional Japanese mortar & pestle and you can use it for grinding sesame seeds, nuts, and spices. You can even grind and mix ingredients in the mortar to create dipping pastes.
The grinding grooves on the inside of the mortar were carved by hand. Then, they were glazed, making it difficult for odors to linger and making it easier to clean.
Because this mortar is so beautiful, once you’ve mixed your sauce, it can double as a serving dish. The spouted lip (called katakuchi in Japanese) makes it easier to pour the contents. This mortar comes with surikogi (pestle) which is made of wild Kiso hinoki (cypress) wood, which was harvested in environmentally-sustainable way. We recommend getting our Fine Teeth Bamboo Scraper to help you to get the all goodness without any waste.
To make ground sesame seeds, we also suggest roasting fine sesame seeds in Horoku Sesame Roaster before for the most aromatic result.
